My name is Joshua Nguyen, and I am a Vietnamese-American author, educator, and organizer.
My connection to Houston is I was born and raised in Houston. My parents, they both fled Vietnam during the Vietnam war, and eventually, they ended up in Houston, Texas. I do think that my father had, my father and my mother had very clear intentions why. You know, one being that in Texas, you're still near the coast. And my family has connections to Beaumont, you know, to the shrimp folks near the Gulf. And so, I think, naturally during that time, Vietnamese people did what they did best, and they stuck with the coast. So eventually, my parents ended up in Houston, and I think that was important, because there's a huge Vietnamese population, especially on Bellaire Boulevard. And every Sunday, after we went to Vietnamese Catholic mass, we would usually go to Bellaire and eat at some Vietnamese restaurant as a family. And I remember my parents having very clear connections to random Vietnamese people I'd never met, just around town. And I think it was important for them to keep that culture and keep that community, especially for me and my siblings. Houston's important to me because it started my entire connection with writing.
In 2013 is when I started writing with the youth spoken word poetry team, Meta-Four Houston. And if it wasn't for that and doing that for my entire four years of high school in Houston, Texas, I wouldn't be where I am now. And I think, there were a lot of times in those early years where my coach would have us run outside in the Houston heat while going over memorized lines. And I think doing that made me have a greater appreciation for the city. And in appreciating the city, I gained great appreciation for writing at the same time. It was a great connection.
This piece, titled "Google Calendar for My Imposter Syndrome" is a hybrid, or you can call it a hermit crab form poem. And it is basically the frame of the online Google Calendar. And the events themselves are the lines that transpires throughout the course of the poem. It goes Sunday, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. And it talks about the idea of imposter syndrome and not being good enough. And this idea of being a working writer and student and also incorporates the hustle of working side jobs. There's a lot of references to working brunch shifts. And, I think, throughout the course of this poem, throughout the course of the book where this poem is from, there's this idea of compartmentalizing and trying to organize the physical clutter of the speaker's world, paralleled with the mental and emotional clutter of the speaker's mind.
This poem is from my debut poetry collection, called "Come Clean," and throughout the book, there is tons of quotidian imagery and tons of a speaker grappling with trauma from the past, in the present, and trying to reorganize, to try to make clarity. And I think this poem, and this form, in particular, does a good job of doing that. What inspired it was, my first year at MFA, I had a, like, a breakdown in my first class at my professor's house, and I started crying, and it was just like, I couldn't believe I was in this fully funded program. And I felt like I wasn't good enough, and I still grapple with not feeling good enough. And in this poem, you know, I wanted to talk about the constraints of imposter syndrome and physically show the constraints of this particular form, the Google Calendar. And especially with the speaker that loves to organize and loves to clean, when the act of trying to organize can take over. You see it here, when events of the calendar overlap each other, you can't even read full lines. So you both visually see the progression of this imposter syndrome, and of the speaker trying to cope with themselves and with their mental state and their emotional state. And yeah, I love form and poetry. And I think most forms, there is idea of constraint and pressure, which will produce attention, right? People go to the sonnet often to talk about form and constraint and how, like, the 14 lines can bring tension.
I think about, one of my favorite poems is this poem by Fatimah Asghar, where it's in the shape of a floor plan. And, similar to this poem, the framework of a floor plan adds a visual element to this constraint, that a speaker who is trying to, either escape or trying to cope. And so, with the Google Calendar, I really wanted the borders of the calendar, the borders of the events per day, to add pressure to the urgency of what the speaker was feeling, was saying. It's funny, this poem, I never thought I would read it out loud, but then when I started doing readings, I realized that it's very fluid, because I could read every day, I could read Sunday, Wednesday Friday, I could read, like, Thursday, Friday, Tuesday. I could read whatever days I want. So, each time, you know, there is like a different variation of the reading. You know, if you're in math, that's like seven factorials, right? Or I don't know if that's true, but there is a lot of ways to read this poem. You can start at any point. So, it's very exciting that the visual aspect of this form connects with people. Cause I think a lot of people deal with Google Calendars on the daily. Yeah, and I hope that, when you think about organizing and cleaning, what's physical or emotional or mental, that the actual act doesn't take over in a negative way.

Esta pieza, titulada "Calendario de Google para mi síndrome de impostor" es un híbrido, o puedes llamarlo un poema en forma de cangrejo ermitaño. Y es básicamente el marco del Calendario de Google en línea. Y los eventos en sí son las líneas que transpiran a lo largo del poema. Va domingo, lunes, martes miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado. Y habla de la idea del síndrome del impostor y no ser lo suficientemente bueno. Y esta idea de ser un escritor en activo y estudiante y también incorpora el ajetreo de los trabajos secundarios. Hay muchas referencias a los turnos de desayuno de trabajo. Y, creo, a lo largo de este poema, a lo largo del libro de donde proviene este poema, existe esta idea de compartimentar y tratar de organizar el desorden físico del mundo del hablante, en paralelo con el desorden mental y emocional de la mente del hablante.
Este poema es de mi primera colección de poesía, titulada "Come Clean", y a lo largo del libro, hay toneladas de imágenes cotidianas y toneladas de un vocero luchando con traumas del pasado, en el presente, y tratando de reorganizar para tratar de tener claridad. Y creo que este poema, y esta forma en particular, hace un buen trabajo al hacer eso. Lo que me inspiró fue mi primer año en MFA, tuve un colapso en mi primera clase en la casa de mi profesor, y comencé a llorar, y fue como, no podía creer que yo estuviera en este programa totalmente financiado, y sentí que no era lo suficientemente bueno, y todavía lucho con no sentirme lo suficientemente bueno. Y en este poema, ya sabes, Quería hablar de las limitaciones del síndrome del impostor. y mostrar físicamente las limitaciones de esta forma particular, el Calendario de Google. especialmente con el orador al que le encanta organizar y le encanta limpiar, cuando el acto de tratar de organizar puede hacerse cargo. Lo ves aquí, cuando los eventos del calendario se superponen, ni siquiera puedes leer líneas completas. Entonces ambos ven visualmente la progresión de este síndrome del impostor, y del orador tratando de hacer frente a sí mismos y con su estado mental y su estado emocional. Y sí, me encanta la forma y la poesía. Y creo que en la mayoría de las formas, hay una idea de restricción y presión, que producirá una tensión ¿no? La gente va al soneto a menudo para hablar de forma y restricción y cómo las 14 líneas pueden traer tensión.
Pienso en uno de mis poemas favoritos que es este poema de Fatimah Asghar, donde tiene la forma de un plano de planta. Y, similar a este poema, el marco de un plano de planta agrega un elemento visual a esta restricción, que un orador que está tratando de escapar o tratando de luchar. Y así, con Google Calendar, tenía muchas ganas de los bordes del calendario, las fronteras de los eventos por día, añadir presión a la urgencia de lo que el orador estaba sintiendo, estaba diciendo.
