  • My name is Joethella Gipson. I'm a wife, a mother, grandmother, an artist, a sewist, and an author.

    I live in Houston, and originally from Rochester, New York.

    This artwork is called "The Underground Railroad." It depicts several different versions of how the slaves used the Underground Railroad, which was a conglomeration of quilts, to tell whether or not they were headed in a safe direction or a correct direction. If the quilt was upside down, it meant, "We could stop. Problem." If it was right side up, "Continue on to the next safe station." Also, they could tell by the chimneys on the houses. Safe houses were the ones that had the chimneys.

    I was inspired of the African American history by using my media in order to work and show the freedom that I had as a quilter. Quilter allows the sewist or the artist to show and express his or herself in many various ways.

    I'm a native Rochesterian, as I said, moved to Texas in 1968 when I married my husband. And we've been married 55 years. He's a retired pastor, and I have one daughter. I have a grandson who's 36 years old. I have a granddaughter who's 27 and who's an architect. And I mentored many, many women in Christian living and in life coaching. I have served as a volunteer to the library system here in Houston. I received several accolades and awards from them as a "Volunteer of the Year," the "Employee of the Year" when I worked for them. And I just enjoy living here in Houston.

    Esta obra se llama <<El ferrocarril subterráneo.>> Manifiesta muchas versiones distintas de cómo los esclavos usaban dichos ferrocarriles. Era una conglomeración de edredones, se preguntaban si se habían dirigido a un lugar seguro o la dirección correcta. Si el edredón estaba al revés, significaba que podían detenerse sin problemas. Si estaba recta es que deberían de seguir avanzando a la estación más segura. También, lo podían predecir con las chimeneas de las casas. Hogares seguros eran los que tenían chimeneas.

    Me inspiró las historias afro-americanas al usar mis medios para trabajar y mostrar la libertad que tenía en el edredón. Los edredones permiten al artista o costurera a mostrar y expresarse él o ella misma de muchas maneras.

    Soy oriunda de Rochester, como ya dije, me mudé a Texas en 1968 cuando me casé con mi esposo. Hemos estado casados por 55 años. Él es un pastor retirado y tengo una hija. Tengo un nieto de 36 años. Tengo una nieta de 27 años y es arquitecta. He dado tutorías a muchas mujeres en la vida cristiana y coaching para la vida. Serví como voluntaria para el sistema de librerías aquí en Houston. Recibí varios galardones y premios por ellos como << Voluntaria del año. >> << La empleada del año >> cuando trabajé para ellos.
